Scanning for steel

How can scanning help steel fabricators?

Laser scanning device mounted on a tripod

Steel fabricators in the Nordic were early adopters of BIM and have developed great workflows for design and fabrication over the years. Many are now looking into scanning and want to find efficient ways to consider the real world and the BIM model together for quality assurance and project planning and other benefits!

In this article we will look into some use cases for scanning focused on the steel fabricator segment!

Structural analysis for Steel

Whether it is global analysis or local analys of connections or other details, we have you covered with our world-leading solutions

Connection design with IDEA StatiCa

IDEA StatiCa is engineering software for structural design and code-checking of steel connections, concrete details, cross sections, beams, and other critical structural components.

It helps engineers verify complex details according to relevant design codes, with a workflow that connects detailed analysis to everyday structural design tasks.

Global analysis with CSi

CSI software is widely used for structural analysis and design of buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure.

SAP2000 provides a flexible analysis environment for a broad range of structural systems, from simple frames to complex civil engineering projects.

ETABS is developed specifically for building analysis and design, with efficient workflows for multi-storey structures, lateral systems, load combinations, and code-based design.

Full FEA with Ansys

Ansys Mechanical is an integrated finite element analysis platform for detailed structural analysis, including linear and nonlinear behaviour, contact, dynamics, and thermal-structural effects.

It is suited for engineers who need deeper insight into stresses, deformations, and performance beyond standard structural design checks.

Ansys is available through our sister company in the Myrien Group, EDRMedeso.

Transforming the Construction of North Sea Oil Platforms

Norwegian offshore constructor Aibel has put Tekla software at the heart of its work designing and manufacturing oil platforms. Aibel’s ongoing project for the massive Johan Sverdrup field is a story that moves from the tropical shipyards of Thailand to the stormy waters of the North Sea - paving the way for Aibel’s future projects beyond oil & gas…

Slagelse Pedestrian Bridge

Slagelse Pedestrian Bridge is 60-meter complex steel bridge located over Slagelse Station for the municipality of Slagelse in Denmark. Its complex geometry was solved with help of Tekla Live Link for Grasshopper. This allowed Rambøll in the early design phases to work on the project while still being able to reposition the main geometry. This project was the Local Winner (DK, NO) of the 2021 BIM Awards in the category: Best Infrastructure Project

Use the model across the steel fabrication process

— connecting estimating, purchasing, production, and project management

Many companies face similar workflow challenges. In the video above, we explain how these issues often begin when information from the model is separated from the rest of the process and managed through drawings, spreadsheets, paper records, and disconnected updates — and how Tekla PowerFab can help connect those workflows.
